About Spiritual Direction
Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry that has been part of the Christian tradition since the earliest times. The desert fathers and mothers were convinced of the value of having a spiritual guide or companion with whom to share their experiences of the ways the Lord had been present to them in their life journeys. Likewise, the early Celtic Christians valued the practice so much that they sometimes travelled great distances over land and sea to meet with their spiritual director, known as their Soul Friend ('Anam Cara').

"Spiritual direction is a prayer process in which a person seeking help in cultivating a deeper relationship with God meets with another for prayer and conversation that is focused on increasing awareness of God in the midst of life experiences and facilitating surrender to God's will."
(David Benner, "Sacred Companions", 2002)
Spiritual direction is not problem-based, although problems may be part of a person’s spiritual journey. Rather, it is faith-based, and it works on the premise that those seeking spiritual accompaniment will have some sense of their lives being an expression of their relationship with God. Distinct from counselling, coaching or mentoring, Spiritual Direction focuses primarily on one’s relationship with God, and helps one to discern God’s presence and action in one’s faith journey.
As a spiritual director rooted in the Christian faith, I recognise that God has called each person to faith through God’s own love, and the Holy Spirit really is the True Director and Guide for each soul. I do not offer therapy, counselling or give advice. Through prayer and reflective listening, I serve as a human spiritual companion in helping you discern the work of the Spirit in your life.
